Xbox Wireless Controller Makes Windows 10 Blue Screen

Hi, I've bough a new xbox one wireless controller, plugged and unplugged it (through a cable) or connected it via bluetooth, several times. Also, I kept removing/updating/disabling/etc. it from 'Device Manager' under "Human Interface Devices' and 'Xbox Peripherals" sections and from "Devices and printers". What's more, I installed an 'Xbox accessories' app from 'Windows Store' and updated my controller. I tried doing all mentioned things in different orders, while also rebooting my OS from time to time.

I eventually ended with a constant BSOD that prevents me from accessing my desktop. I am able to access 'safe mode'.

BSOD error message: DRIVER IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Before BSOD I also removed driver for my previous controller (cheap one from tracer. Everything worked fine after) and used CCleaner (tmp files+registry cleaning).

General information:

- Windows 10 x64 (kept up to date, I checked for possible updates when doing all the stuff above)

- Originally installed OS: Windows 8.1. I updated to win10 about eight months ago.

- Device:

  * laptop - ASUS ROG G771JW

  * NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960m

  * Intel Core i7-4720HQ

I wasn't able to run 'perfmon /report' command due to an error: "The system cannot find the path specified". All applied solutions to fix it didn't work.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version x) dates from 2015.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it. WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.
FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and that outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).

Only 4 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most build 14393 (1607) systems have more than this.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available Windows Updates.
The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

This device has problems in Device Manager:

Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC) Driver    ACPI\INT340F\2&DABA3FF&0    This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.

Please uninstall this driver, then download and install the Intel CPPC driver from the Other section of the download page for your model at Asus support.

The memory dumps blame xinputhid.sys - a Windows driver.

The first step here is to ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates.

If the BSOD's continue after that, then I would suspect the Tilt Wheel mouse driver that you have installed (uninstall it to test).

I managed to fix this issue in surprisingly easy way. I will give you detailed information about what went wrong and what went right. I also have a few question to you.

ATTEMPTS

Unfortunately I wasn't able to apply any of solutions you suggested probably because I was running windows in safe mode. I didn't try Driver Verifier though.

I wasn't able to open 'Update & Security" section in Start > Settings. Each time I did it the window closed and an error information appeared in 'Event Viewer' in section 'System' with message:
DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service dps with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:

Section 'Windows Update' wasn't displayed in 'Control Panel'. I guess that's because I was running Windows in safe mode.

Next I downloaded Intel CPPC driver from ASUS support and removed local driver by going to Device Manager > System Devices > Intel CPPC > Properties > Driver > Uninstall. Then I started driver installation and a window appeared with error message saying 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software'. I made sure I downloaded driver for right device and OS version.

I also tried to remove Xbox related apps (one of them installed by me), but for every application from Windows Store the 'uninstall' button was doing nothing. However I was able to install and uninstall other programs.

SOLUTION

What eventually worked is I opened Device Manager and pressed 'Show hidden devices' in View menu. Then I was able to see all the devices I installed earlier, in particular my controller. Next I removed a bunch of devices from 3 sections: about 15 in total (some of them were displayed more than once): 'HID-compliant game controller', 'HID-compliant game system', 'USB Input Device', 'Bluetooth XINPUT compatible input device', 'XINPUT compatible HID device' and 'USB Input Device' from 'Human Interface Devices' section, 'Xbox Wireless Controller' from 'Bluetooth' section, 'Xbox Controller' from 'Xbox Peripherals' section. I didn't remove 'HID-compliand device' (misspelling intended) from 'Human Interface Devices' though because it asked me for removal of other software.

Then I restarted my laptop and happily everything worked.

After successful reboot, I reinstalled Intel CPPC driver, removed 'Xbox One SmartGlass' and 'Xbox 360 SmartGlass' (the former was installed by me. It may or may not have been involved in the BSOD issues).

I also noticed that a few of the devices I removed were back in Device Manager so I removed them again and I also opened 'Devices and Printers' in Control Panel and removed my controller from there.

QUESTIONS
Could you please explain what do you mean by

Only 4 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most build 14393 (1607) systems have more than this.

I'm trying to keep my OS updated by visiting 'Update & Security' in Settings and installing all available updates regularly. Is there anything I am missing? I checked my Update history and every update that failed to install was successfully installed later. And is word 'hotfixes' relevant here or did you mean 'updates' in general? I searched internet for more information and people had different understanding for that word.

You also mentioned I had a 'Tilt Wheel mouse' driver installed. I think removing this driver would help me solve my initial problem (that lead me to adding/removing my controller repeatedly), but I can't find it anywhere in Device Manager. Could you please advise me where I can find it and how to remove it?

Explanation:  The way that Microsoft installs updates is confusing to most (and to me).

As such, I merely find the number of hotfixes listed in the systeminfo.txt report. (Hotfixes can contain 1 update, or they can contain many updates)

Having done this a lot, I find that most W10 Anniversary Update (build 14393) system have 7 hotfixes installed

This is an estimate, and each system is different, so the number won't necessarily be the same on different systems.

As such, I advise you to check for more updates.

If you check, and don't get any errors, and don't see any more updates - then there's nothing to worry about.

This is the entry in your startups that loads the Tilt Wheel:

MouseDriver    tiltwheelmouse.exe    Public    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you edit the registry, make sure that you backup the key for this BEFORE deleting the key

You may be able to disable this in the Startup tab of Task Manager

You can also use this free program to disable it:  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Please note that I don't suggest deleting it (unless you save a copy first).
That way, should something happen, you can go back to it easily (if needed).

This is a good thing to do any time you make changes to your system.
